Our Problem
Throughout researching we learned that one-use plastic bags are still being used in Farmers Markets. Plastic bags are hurting the environment and affecting everyone around the world. Better Bags hopes to change this habit by getting communities to use our eco-friendly bread bags.

Plastic usage around the world has increased and Better Bags wants to help this cause. Even though we are in a small community, our reusable bags will help keep our world become more eco friendly and plastic free. It took less than four decades for plastic bags to make the transition from marvel to menace. Plastic bags were born in the post-World War II explosion of manufactured plastic household goods and became popular in the 1970s. By the end of the 1980s, grocery stores in the United States had switched from paper to plastic; plastic bags proliferated after that by the millions.
This National Geographic Article mentions this idea. Better Bags aims to decrease the usage of plastic bags in local farmers markets. People rely on plastic bags everyday. The average American household uses 1,500 plastic bags every year. That means every year 70-100 billion plastic bags are used. Less than 14% of this plastic actually gets recycled.

There are 5 confirmed gyres of plastic in our ocean. A gyre is circulating water currents. When we use plastic and put it in the ocean, the plastic eventually ends up in a gyre. Gyres of plastic are so harmful to our oceans, fish, and even us! If the fish eats the plastic bag in the ocean, later down the food chain we will eat the fish. This means that we are eating plastic. Eating plastic is incredibly harmful to our bodies, and environment. The image bellow is of an example of a gyre filled with plastic.

The Goal Better Bags hope is to eliminate plastic bread bags that you can find at farmers markets. Better Bags goal is to replace it with eco friendly bags, that can also be reused! Better Bags aims to keep the bread fresh, while still helping the environment. |
Animals on land, and in the ocean are affected by the over use of plastic. All around the world animals are dying from plastic. It is estimated that 100 MILLION marine animals die each year from plastic. This No Plastic Oceans article shows the statistics of animal deaths each year.
